Vulcan Materials Quarry Visit

On June 28, 2014, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 88 visited the Vulcan Materials quarry in Hanover, Pennsylvania.  The Scouts visited the quarry to learning more about rock formations that are local to our area while working on their Geology merit badge.  This was a great opportunity to experienced what is like to be at the bottom of a 300 foot deep open mine and to see first hand how huge all the equipment used to mine the materials and the processes the rock undergoes to become…

Rocky Knob Overnight Hike

Our weekend outing on the Rocky Knob Trail was a great group outing.  All the scouts did a wonderful job.  The weather couldn’t have been much better, although the night did a little chilly. Here is the route of our trek in <click here>.  I recorded it on my phone and it appears fairly accurate, but the 2675 ft elevation gain appears to be a possible recording anomaly.   The gory details: Name: Hike In Activity type: walking Description:…

At each station, the Scouts were challenged to complete various activities which demonstrate their Scout and leadership skills, teamwork, and Scout Spirit.  At…

Random Thoughts on Volunteers and Costs

“Be Prepared” The scout motto is “be prepared.” Print this list off and give it to your scout. Make them responsible for their gear, but it’s okay to check them- it makes life better for the adult VOLUNTEERS. When I was a new adult leader, I would “loan” a flashlight, poncho, and etc. to the poor scout that failed to pack properly. Often, would never get it returned. Or, they would expect me to have extras of everything on every…

Random Thoughts on Equipment & Campouts

Get our Recommended Camping Gear List Cups I like metal cups. They stand up to the abuse scouts give them. However, in cold weather, the kids like drinking hot beverages. Hot drinks and a metal cup. . . Ouch! Consider an insulated mug for cold weather. Shoes In ten years as an adult leader, I have learned that most scouts arrive for any event in sneakers. It doesn’t matter if we are hiking 8 miles in the mountains, camping in…

52nd Annual West Point Camporee 2014

Every year the Cadet Scoutmasters’ Council hosts The West Point Camporee at Lake Frederick for approximately 7,000 scouts from more than 300 different Boy and Girl Scout troops. The camporee is very popular and typically can only accommodate about half of the troops who apply for an invitation.  Troop 88 was very excited to be one of the selected troops to attend this nation-wide camporee at one of the most distinguished military academies in the world.

Gettysburg Battlefield Encampment

During the Encampment, 3,000 Scouts and leaders camped on the grassy fields of the George Spangler Farm, the best surviving example of a farm used as a field hospital during the battle of Gettysburg, where upwards of 1,900 men were treated for wounds, both minor and fatal, and Confederate Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead died.
