Youth Leadership Positions

Boys in youth leadership positions should always set a good example, wear their uniforms correctly, and live by the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. Leadership positions (Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leaders, and Assistant Patrol Leaders) are generally held only by Scouts who have achieved the rank of First Class.  SPLlogoSenior Patrol Leader (SPL)  Responsible to: Scoutmaster (SM)

Specific Duties:

  • Preside at all troop meetings, events, activities, and annual program planning conference.
  • Chair the patrol leaders’ council (PLC).
  • Name appointed boy leaders with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster.
  • Assign duties and responsibilities to other leaders.
  • Work with Scoutmaster in training junior leaders.
  • Senior Patrol Leader should have completed JLTC (Junior Leadership Training Conference) prior to assuming this position if it has been offered in our area.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law,  and shows Scout spirit.

 

ASPLAssistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) – Responsible to: SPL

Specific Duties:

  • Be responsible for training and giving direct leadership to the following appointed junior leaders: scribe, librarian, troop historian, instructor, quartermaster, webmaster, leave no trace trainer and chaplains aide.
  • Help with leading meetings and activities as called upon by the senior patrol leader.
  • Take over troop leadership in the absence of the senior patrol leader.
  • Perform tasks assigned by the senior patrol leader.  Function as a member of the patrol leaders’ council (PLC).
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

PLlogoPatrol Leader (PL) –  Responsible to: SPL

Specific Duties:

  • Plan and lead patrol meetings and activities.
  • Keep patrol members informed.
  • Assign each patrol member a job and help them succeed.  Know what the patrol members and other leaders can do.
  • Represent the patrol at all patrol leaders’ council (PLC)meetings and at the annual program planning a conference.
  • Prepare the patrol to take part in all troop activities.
  • Develop patrol spirit.
  • Work with other troop leaders to make the troop run well.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

APL logoAssistant Patrol Leader (APL) –  Responsible to: PL

Specific Duties:

  • Assist the patrol leader in planning and leading patrol meetings and activities.
  • Keeping patrol member informed.
  • Preparing their patrol to take part in all troop activities.
  • Take charge of the patrol in the absence of the patrol leader.
  • Represent the patrol at all patrol leaders council (PLC) meetings in the absence of the patrol leader.
  • Help develop patrol spirit.
  • Work with other troop leaders to make the troop run well.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

TroopGuide logoTroop Guide –  Responsible to: ASM – New Scout Patrol

Specific Duties:

  • Help Scouts meet advancement requirements through First Class.
  • Advise patrol leader on his duties and his responsibilities at patrol leaders’ council meetings Attend patrol leaders’ council meetings with the new Scout patrol leader.
  • Prevent harassment of new Scouts by older Scouts.
  • Help assistant Scoutmaster train new patrol leader when he is elected.
  • Guide new Scout though early troop experiences to help them become comfortable in the troop and the outdoors.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

OA Rep logoOrder of the Arrow Representative –  Responsible to: ASPL

Specific Duties:

  • Encourage year round and resident camping in the Troop, older Scout participation in high adventure programs, and participation in community service projects.
  • Assist with leadership skills training.
  • Encourage Arrowmen to fill leadership positions in the Troop, and participate in OA activities.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

TroopQuartermasterlogoTroop Quartermaster –  Responsible to: ASPL & Troop Committee member responsible for Equipment

Specific Duties:

  • Attends monthly QM meetings.
  • Keep records of patrol and troop equipment.
  • Keep records of patrol and troop equipment.
  • Issue equipment and see that it is returned in good order.
  • Suggest new or replacement items.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

ScribeTroop Scribe –  Responsible to: ASPL &  works with the Troop Committee

Specific Duties:

  • Attend and keep a log of patrol leaders’ council (PLC) meetings.
  • Record attendance as required.
  • Maintain troop correspondence (thank you notes, donation requests, etc.)
  • Work with appropriate troop committee members responsible for finance, records and advancement as needed.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

lib logoTroop Librarian –  Responsible to: ASPL

Specific Duties:

  • Establish and maintain a troop library.
  • Keep records on literature owned by the troop.
  • Add new or replacement item needed.
  • Have literature available for borrowing at troop meetings.
  • Keep system to check literature in and out.
  • Follow up on late returns.
  • Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

Chaplain logoTroop Chaplain Aide –  Responsible to: ASPL

Specific Duties:

  • Keep troop leader appraised of religious holidays when planning activities.
  • Assist Chaplain or religious coordinator in meeting the religious needs of troop members while on activities.
  • Encourage saying grace at meals while camping or on activities.
  • Tell Scouts about the religious emblem program of their faith.
  • Help plan for religious observance in troop activities.
  • Regularly attends troop meetings, troop campouts, and troop events during his service period.
  • Set a good example.
  • Enthusiastically wear the Scout uniform correctly.
