Boy Scout Troop 88

On June 28, 2014, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 88 visited the Vulcan Materials quarry in Hanover, Pennsylvania.  The Scouts visited the quarry to learning more about rock formations that are local to our area while working on their Geology merit badge.  This was a great opportunity to experienced what is like to be at the bottom of a 300 foot deep open mine and to see first hand how huge all the equipment used to mine the materials and the processes the rock undergoes to become…

Each year on Memorial Day, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 88 participate in the annual tradition of placing flags on the graves of soldiers who had fallen in the service during the civil war at the Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA on May 24, 2014.    

  Our weekend outing on the Rocky Knob Trail was a great group outing.  All the scouts did a wonderful job.  The weather couldn’t have been much better, although the night did a little chilly. While Camping at the Hidden Valley Scout Reservation.  A small group of Scouts and leaders of Lake Meade Boy Scout Troop 88 hiked the Flat Rock Trail and are enjoying  the 180-degree spectacular view of Cumberland Valley from an rock outcrop on the Flat Rock Trail overlook.   

The theme for the District Klondike Derby this year was “Experience the Traditions.” Activities for this year’s Klondike Derby focused on a patrol-based competition involving Scouts participating in various activities as they move through a timeline over the years in Scouting. The Troop traveled back into time and learned all about Scouting’s early years up until present time. Every year the Cadet Scoutmasters’ Council hosts The West Point Camporee at Lake Frederick for approximately 7,000 scouts from more than 300 different Boy and Girl Scout troops. The camporee is very popular and typically can only accommodate about half of the troops who apply for an invitation.  Troop 88 was very excited to be one of the selected troops to attend this nation-wide camporee at one of the most distinguished military academies in the world.

During the Encampment, 3,000 Scouts and leaders camped on the grassy fields of the George Spangler Farm, the best surviving example of a farm used as a field hospital during the battle of Gettysburg, where upwards of 1,900 men were treated for wounds, both minor and fatal, and Confederate Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead died.
